As a younger teacher, this really hit a deep point of frustration and sorrow about the reality of our practice. Both teachers and our students deserve so much more. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! It's unfortunate that a lot of the troubles I had when I first started are still true today. Then again, John Dewey (very famous US educator, 1859-1952) could walk into a classroom today and a lot of it would be familiar to him. The 19th century structure is still there.

Such an interesting and heartfelt way to speak of our broken system. I couldn't even imagine being a teacher in America, partially because I knew them! It's clearly been a journey I look forward to hearing more about.

It's a mess, but there is also a lot that works. For all of the chaos of the system, there is also an incredible amount that works. Simply put, there are so many positive people trying to make good things happen for kids - and they are making it happen. But the structure doesn't seem to be built for that and success happens despite it.
